Role Overview & Responsibilities

The Glasgow School of Art is looking to make a number of temporary appointments to teach on Module 2 and Module 3 of the Pre-sessional English for Creative Disciplines Blended (PS ECD), which aims to support international students in developing their English language and academic skills, including relevant processes and practices, necessary to engage with academic study in the fields of creative disciplines. Working within a small team, including EAP, studio and subject teachers, the postholders will deliver the programme to ensure it best prepares students for onward progression in all aspects of language, academic skills, studio and theoretical perspectives.

The whole PS ECD lasts 15 weeks, consisting of three modules, each built around a different theme and progressively more challenging in terms of the content and language requirements. The first introductory module lasts four weeks and is delivered online. It is followed by two modules of 5 weeks each and it is these two longer modules that we are looking for teachers to work on. These modules are set to run fully online and in a blended format on campus using a combination of face-to-face workshops and consultations as well as online study/teaching. In other words, there will be two tracks running parallel; however, this may change depending on the student numbers in interest in online/face-to-face delivery. Hence, the applicants need to demonstrate flexibility and adaptability.

Regardless of the delivery format, the curriculum follows a flipped classroom approach, with big chunks of independent and collaborative study conducted under the guidance of the teachers, with teachers offering just-in-time assistance and feedback on students’ progress. There is a real-time/live class/workshop every day the focus of which is on facilitating learning and practice. The post also entails preparing and further developing teaching materials, participating in course meetings, including training, CPD and standardisation as well as carrying out administrative duties.

There is a four-day induction prior to the start of teaching to get to know the team, familiarise yourself with course materials, learning environments and technologies. There is an extra day after completing the course to allow for wrapping up the teaching, report-writing and to give feedback. These are included in the contract.

There are a number of positions to teach on the following two courses, 10 and 5 weeks. The dates below indicate the start and the end of the contract, including 1 week for induction and wrap-up:

To teach on the 10-week course: 20th June – 04th Sep 2023 ·

To teach on the 5-week course: 25th July – 04th Sep 2023
