Role Overview & Responsibilities

The Department of Education is seeking to appoint a Research Associate in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities to take up post from 1st October 2023.

The Department is proud to be recognised as one of the leading Education departments in the country and has undergone a substantial programme of expansion in recent years. You will join the Psychology in Education Research Centre, whose staff enjoy an international reputation. You will work alongside colleagues to help strengthen further the reputation of the Department through undertaking high quality research, assisting with the managing of research projects, and helping to attract research funding. A principal element of the Research Associate’s role will be to support the research programme of the Co-Head of Department and the position is linked to her term in office. Opportunities to contribute to teaching and/or supervision on the Department’s undergraduate and postgraduate programmes may be made available.

Role

  • To conduct research under the supervision of Co-Head of Department, Prof Kathryn Asbury, and to contribute to the production of research
  • To assist in the identification and development of potential areas of research and the development of proposals for independent or collaborative research projects

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • PhD in Psychology, Education, Disability Studies, Philosophy or other relevant subject, or equivalent experience
  • Excellent knowledge of qualitative research methods.
  • Excellent knowledge of research related to Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, including knowledge of the neurodiversity movement and neurodivergent conditions.
  • Has research expertise in an area that will complement and enhance the department's research strategy and goals
  • Highly developed communication skills to engage effectively with a wide ranging audience, both orally and in writing, using a range of media
  • Ability to write up research work for publication in high profile journals and engage in public dissemination
  • Ability to develop research objectives , projects and proposals for own and joint research, with the assistance of a mentor if required
  • Competency to conduct individual and collaborative research projects
  • Ability to identify sources of funding and contribute to the process of securing funds, with collaborators if required.
  • Competency to make presentations at conferences or exhibit work in other appropriate events.
  • Experience of carrying out both independent and collaborative research.
  • Experience of writing up research work for publication.
  • Experience of working with qualitative datasets.
  • A willingness to write articles for publication in high quality peer-reviewed journals.
